Navigating Pregnancy When Plus Size: Embracing Your Journey with Confidence

Let's talk about pregnancy when you're plus size. While every pregnancy journey is unique and beautiful, navigating it in a larger body can sometimes come with specific considerations and unfortunately, sometimes, unique challenges or biases. It's crucial to remember that your body is incredibly capable and designed for this profound experience. As a plus size woman myself who experienced 3 plus size pregnancies, I want empower you with information, helping you embrace your pregnancy with confidence and ensure you receive the supportive care you deserve.

Understanding Your Body and Pregnancy

Being plus size during pregnancy often means there's a bit more to consider, but it absolutely doesn't mean your pregnancy is inherently "high risk." Your body is doing incredible work! Some common areas that might be discussed more often include:

  • Weight Gain Guidelines: While there are general recommendations for weight gain in pregnancy, these are often adjusted for individuals starting at a higher BMI. Your healthcare provider can guide you on a healthy range for you.

  • Monitoring: You might experience more frequent monitoring of blood pressure or glucose levels, which is often a proactive measure to ensure your health and your baby's.

  • Physical Comfort: The increased weight and changes in your center of gravity can sometimes exacerbate common pregnancy aches and pains.

Common Challenges and How to Navigate Them

It's important to be aware of potential challenges so you can advocate for yourself and find solutions:

Finding Supportive Care:

  • Challenge: Sometimes, plus-size individuals face bias or a sole focus on weight during prenatal appointments.

  • Navigation: Seek out healthcare providers who are weight-inclusive, compassionate, and focus on overall health rather than just the number on the scale. Don't hesitate to switch providers if you don't feel respected or heard.

Physical Discomfort and Movement:

  • Challenge: Increased back pain, hip pain, or difficulty with certain movements can occur due to added strain on joints and muscles.

  • Navigation: Work with a physical therapist (like me!) specializing in prenatal care. We can provide personalized exercises, ergonomic tips, and strategies to improve comfort and maintain mobility. Gentle movement like walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are often excellent.

Gestational Diabetes & Preeclampsia:

  • Challenge: There can be a slightly higher risk for conditions like gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.

  • Navigation: Proactive monitoring with your healthcare provider is key. Focus on a balanced, nutrient-dense diet and consistent, safe physical activity as advised by your medical team.

Body Image and Self-Compassion:

  • Challenge: Pregnancy can bring complex feelings about body image, which can be amplified if you've already experienced body shaming.

  • Navigation: Practice radical self-compassion. Your body is doing an incredible job. Focus on what it's doing (growing a human!) rather than how it looks. Surround yourself with supportive people and positive messages.

Finding Accessible Equipment and Clothing:

  • Challenge: Sometimes, finding maternity clothes or even hospital gowns that fit comfortably can be frustrating.

  • Navigation: Research plus-size maternity brands online. Ask your healthcare provider about hospitals that are known for being size-inclusive in their equipment.

Embracing Your Journey with Confidence

Your size does not define your pregnancy or your ability to be a wonderful parent. Focus on:

  • Advocacy: Don't be afraid to ask questions, voice concerns, and seek out care that makes you feel supported and respected.

  • Holistic Health: Prioritize nourishing your body with good food, staying active in ways that feel comfortable, getting adequate rest, and tending to your mental and emotional well-being.

  • Building Your Team: Surround yourself with a supportive birth team – including a size-inclusive OB, midwife, doula, and a physical therapist who understands your unique needs.
